Considered a lone wolf and antisocial during his years at Suzuran, Kurosawa Kazumitsu (or Kurosar, as he was often called) was not a member of any faction. During his Freshman year, he was one of the spoken favorites to win the Freshman War along with Kanbe Yoshikatu (aka Butcher) and Harada Tokio. As a Freshman, he also looked up to Suzuran's Katou Hideyoshi, who resembled his lone wolf nature in more ways than one. However, before the War's results would become official, outsider Hanaki Guriko unexpectedly made his appearance by defeating Suzuran's strongest man, Zetton.

Despite his upperclassmen's fury at Zetton's defeat, Kurosawa convinces them to let him and the rest of the First Years take care of the problem. But when he challenged Guriko to a fight, Kurosawa lost, thus making the Afro Demon Suzuran's strongest individual. Despite their early rivalry, the two men eventually became close friends and Kurosawa would become recognized as Guriko's right-hand man, even if they didn't belong to any faction. Guriko gave him his nickname.

He has had numerous notable rivalries with a number of the Town's key players over the years, including the aforementioned Guriko,Kawachi Tesshou, and Housen's Mashima Kazuya, who was also the same man who gave Kurosawa his scar. During his rematch against Mashima in the Suzuran-Housen War at the Monster's Forest, Kurosawa emerged the victor, despite the knife the Housen sophomore threatened to use against him.

Kurosawa also has a past with his kohei, Nakamura Ginji, who offered to follow him as soon as he entered Suzuran. But Kurosawa tells Ginji to follow Tsukishima Hana instead, saying that he possesses something that they both lack. The two have a brotherly relationship, with Kurosawa even going so far as to tell Ginji that he reminded Kurosawa of himself when he was still a Freshman.
